To move —
That this House —
- Notes
(a) the latest crime statistics data that shows 174,432 family violence offences were reported in the year ending 30 June 2021, an increase of 18 per cent on the previous year;
(b) that each year there are more than 34,000 incidents of family violence that occur where a child is present;
(c) that there were 7,820 affected family members of family violence aged 0 to 17 years; - Recognises that children who witness violence are at greater risk of becoming offenders of violence, perpetuating the cycle of offending;
- Understands that the stability of a safe home is important to the development of a child and that victims of family violence are often forced to leave their homes;
- Further notes the commitment of the Government in August 2020 to fund programs that facilitate the removal of perpetrators of family violence from the family home and into short or long-term accommodation; and calls on the Government to report to the Council on efforts to combat family violence against these concerning statistics.
