Placing victims at the heart of reform

Motion

Tania MAXWELL (Northern Victoria):

I give notice that, on the next day of meeting, I will move that this House —

  1. notes that

a) there were 32,229 victim reports identified by Crime Statistics data where the victim experienced a high level of harm in 2021;

2. recognises

a) the harrowing trauma that victims and survivors of crime endure over their lifetime as a result of the acts perpetrated against them or their loved one;

3. calls on the government to implement responses that put the rights and supports for victims of crime first, including —

a) changes to the Victims’ Charter Act 2006 to embed rights as recommended by the Victorian Law Reform Commission;

b) an expanded Victims Legal Service to provide legal representation for victims of crime throughout the criminal justice process;

c) a Right to Review scheme;

d) the removal of caps on counselling within the Victims of Crime Financial Assistance Scheme; and

e) the establishment a Victims’ Support Portal.
